Jesus likes drunk people?

My sermon today was the start of a new series that will take a look at the miracles in the book of John.  We will be going through the 7 miracles and will finish at Easter.  You can hear the sermon on iTunes or download the audio here. We started by talking about John, how John was an Essene and besides being warrior’s who were planning to kill anyone who was in the way of the Messiah these people were also master story tellers and they were great at telling one story with two plot lines.

One plot on the surface that tells a basic story that applies to the group and another plot that applies to the whole world and has deep implications for EVERYONE who hears it.

This is where we enter the scripture.

Mary says “we are out of wine.” She doesn’t ask Jesus to get more or fix the problem but she knows that he will.

Jesus does this right after leaving the wilderness.

I don’t get this miracle. Jesus makes wine? Why does he do this? If Jesus didn’t do this miracle the worst that would happen is people would sober up?

Yet in that day wine is considered a sign of abundance.

Jesus does this miracle after leaving the wilderness and so he gives abundance to a couple when he wouldn’t even make a bread to save himself.  This is a foreshadow of the cross.

At the cross Jesus doesn’t even save himself yet saves us.

We are still forced to ask why does Jesus use ceremonial washing jars instead of wine jars?

This is where we remember that John tells two stories. John tells us that Jesus not only foreshadows the cross but now those ritual jars have been defiled and must be destroyed.

Jesus from the very beginning in one single move has unequivocally stated the old dead religion is gone and if you want real joy and real abundance than Jesus is the only way and he has a brand new way through him.  The other way only fools people who are already drunk.

Again, if you want to hear the audio it is on iTunes (search for Tanoma) or just click here
