Zuccardi- Sounds Italian, but it's not

Zuccardi Malbec 2007 Mendoza Argentina

Bought at Costco for $15.

Sounds Italian, but it’s Argentinian.  But it does say on the back of the bottle ‘Bottled by Familia Zuccardi.  The winery’s founder, Alberto Zuccardi came to Argentina from California in 1963.  What I like about this winery in particular is twofold: first, that the winery remains in family hands which is unusual nowadays, and second that they have invested heavily in modern equipment which leads me to suspect that this will be yet another quality wine from Argentina.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Tasting notes:

Short version: it’s good.  Longer version: relatively light in color, echoed in a light nose.  Not really floral, but definitely notes of bright bramble fruit- strawberry and blueberry.  Juicy acid, seems quite food friendly.  I tried it with chicken wings and it held up to them nicely.  Short finish, with definite woody tannins.  No real notes of smoke as I expected.  Very slightly spicy but without any peppery bite.  Overall, very approachable and enjoyable, if perhaps a bit simple.  It’s fruity without being jammy, and very pleasant.  If you like straightforward, approachable, juicy wines (like Zinfandel, or Central Coast Syrahs, for example) then this will be a great wine for you.  If you like elegant, complex, intruiging wines then you’ll be disappointed- although only slightly.  It’s definitely a good deal at $15.  I’ll probably drink a bunch when the weather warms.  Cheers!
